Being a work-from-home mom is a juggling act, right? It sounds like a dream to be able to work from home, and it truly can be. But it also has its challenges, like most things. Between emails, meal prep, virtual meetings, and trying to remember if you switched on the laundry, it’s a wild ride. Sometimes, it feels like you need superhero powers just to keep up. But here’s the thing—you don’t need superpowers, just a few essential skills to make life run a little smoother. This is coming from someone who has done freelance or content creation work from home for years.

Whether you’re new to working from home or a seasoned pro looking to level up, mastering these skills will make your days more manageable and even enjoyable. So grab that cup of coffee that you’ve already reheated 3 times, or in my case, that iced matcha latte with the ice already melted #momlife, and let’s dive into the must-have skills every work-from-home mom needs to thrive!
1. Time Management Skills
I was a homeschool kid and one with a single working mom. I had to do my school work on my own while my mom was gone. And while I didn’t hate school, it wasn’t my favorite thing in the world, so I just wanted to get it done. And the good thing about homeschooling all those years ago was I could just get it done and move on with my day if I managed my time well. So good time management was something I learned early on.
However, when our daughter came along, my work-from-home life changed. I got a break when she was a newborn, but really wanted to get my own business up and going, and as she became a toddler, I had to change how I worked and how I managed my time.
The great thing about time management is it’s a skill that can be learned,d and you can also learn to adjust as needed.
Here are some tips:
- Learn to create a realistic daily schedule that balances work and mom duties.
- Master the art of batching tasks to minimize distractions and maximize productivity.
- Use time-blocking techniques to ensure both work and family time get the attention they deserve.
- Leverage digital tools like Trello or Notion to keep your schedule organized and flexible.
I’m a big fan of Notion and digital planners.

2. Communication Skills
This one was crucial for me to learn when I was a freelancer working directly with clients and also with editors and agencies. People are in a hurry and have their own things on their minds so it is very important that we are clear. Communicating online is not the same as in person and tones and body language can be missed so we need to be even more clear.
While I am not working with clients anymore, this is a skill I still need running my own business as I now need to be clear in my communication with my audience and customers. And with my family to set healthy boundaries around my work.
Communication Tips:
- Practice clear and concise communication with your boss, clients, or team members. (And customers, if you have them.)
- Set expectations with your family about your work hours to minimize interruptions.
- Use apps like Slack or Zoom to stay connected and maintain professional relationships.
- Develop assertiveness to advocate for your needs without feeling guilty.
3. Adaptability and Flexibility
Adaptability is something we learn with mom life. A child gets sick, is just extra clingy, spills something, etc. our lives rarely go exactly to plan. Learning to balance having a vision and setting goals with holding everything loosely can be challenging for many of us.
Here are some tips:
- Embrace changes in your schedule and find ways to pivot when things go off track.
- Keep a list of backup plans for when childcare falls through or unexpected tasks pop up.
- Stay mentally agile by practicing mindfulness or quick stress-relief techniques.
- Cultivate a mindset of grace and resilience when things don’t go as planned.
Give yourself and your children grace and have backup plans for when needed.

4. Self-Motivation and Discipline
I had self-motivation and discipline when I wanted to finish my homeschool days. You have to have a lot of both when working from home. You have the temptation to scroll through social media or plop down in front of the tv, do house work and projects, or maybe even run errands. It depends on your type of work and how flexible it is but we have to have the discipline to stick to our plans and schedule as much as possible.
Some tips:
- Set clear goals to stay motivated, even when distractions are everywhere.
- Create a dedicated workspace that inspires focus and minimizes chaos.
- Use declarations and vision exercises to keep your mindset strong.
- Celebrate small wins to stay motivated and maintain momentum.
Having a dedicated workspace as been a great help for me!
