Hey, Mama! 🏡✨
When was the last time you felt relaxed? What did the environment around you look like?
There were likely some calm colors involved. Perhaps the colors of nature.

We all know that life as a mom can be chaotic, but did you know that the colors in your home can help create a sense of peace and calm? Whether you’re managing work-from-home chaos or keeping up with the kids, the right color combinations can transform your space into a sanctuary.
It turns out the colors in our home can have an impact on our mental health and possibly even our relationships.
Psychology intern and therapist Anita Yokota is now an interior designer and had this to say,
As a psychology intern, I did a lot of home visits. One of the first things that I learned to do…is observe the emotional climate of the home,” Yokota says. She adds that visiting clients’ homes from Compton and all the way to Malibu “taught me so much of how our home environment can really affect our mood, [and] it can affect our relationships that live [in the home].
I can attest to the power of color with my recent $26 bedroom makeover. The room was blue before but not a great shade and the paint was dingy and dirty. A new coat of sage green paint transformed the room. I feel like I’m in a calming hotel room and like I can breathe better when I’m in there.
The power of color and a cheap can of paint can often be overlooked in our homes so let’s talk about it!
Here are some color ideas and palettes to give your space a refresh and help clear your mind.
1. Soft Blues & Bright Whites: A Coastal Retreat at Home
Imagine stepping into a room that feels like a breath of fresh sea air every time you enter. Soft blues paired with bright or warm whites can give your home that serene, coastal vibe we all crave. Blue is known for its calming properties—perfect for unwinding after a long day of juggling work, kids, and everything in between. White adds light and space, making your home feel open, airy, and uncluttered, which is exactly what you need when life feels overwhelming. Cool colors to the rescue!

Blue has been my favorite color for a long time and I love a bright blue paired with a bright white think coastal vibes or those gorgeous blue and white classic Mediterranean tiles.
Calmness and peace are two words that come to mind when thinking about the color blue. It is a non-aggressive color that encourages serenity, orderliness, and tranquility. This could be because we associate oceans with blue, and it can be a mentally soothing color for some people.
Any room can vibe well with blue.
How to Use It:
- Living Room: Paint the walls in a soft, pale blue and complement with white trim or wainscoting. Add white or beige furniture with blue accents, like throw pillows or a cozy blanket, to tie the room together.
- Bedroom: Opt for light blue bedding with white sheets and pillows. A soft blue accent wall behind your bed can create a focal point and enhance the feeling of calm.
- Kitchen: Bring a touch of the Mediterranean to your kitchen by incorporating blue elements whether it is blue and white tiles for your backsplash or bold blue cabinetry. Pair with white or light gray countertops to keep the look fresh and clean. Blue kitchen accents, like dishware, kitchen towels, and bar stools, can also infuse a sense of calm into the heart of your home.
Pinterest Inspiration: Check out some stunning blue and white coastal-themed decor ideas that are perfect for your living spaces. And you don’t have to go over the top theme like adding seashells. You can just gain inspiration from nature to freshen up your space.
Add some airy curtains that let in plenty of natural light.
2. Shades of Green: An Ode To Nature
Green is the color of nature, growth, and renewal. It has a calming, restful effect on the mind, making it an excellent choice for creating a peaceful atmosphere in your home. Whether you opt for soft sage like I did with our master bedroom, rich emerald, or anything in between, incorporating green into your space can help you feel more connected to the outdoors and bring a sense of serenity into your daily life.
Green is a dominant color in nature, symbolizing the lushness of forests and the richness of natural environments. It is regarded as the most soothing and restful color for the human eye on the color wheel. Green embodies harmony, tranquility, and peace, enhancing stability and endurance. It is commonly associated with growth and renewal, promoting optimism, hopefulness, and balance.
How to Use It:
- Living Room: Consider a soft sage green for your walls to create a calm and inviting space. Pair with natural wood furniture and cream-colored accents to enhance the earthy feel. A few green throw pillows or a green area rug can add depth and warmth without overwhelming the room. A dark green velvet couch is on my dream list!
- Kitchen: Bring the freshness of green into your kitchen with sage or dark green cabinets or a green tile backsplash. Pair with white or light wood countertops for a crisp, clean look. Adding potted herbs or green plants can also breathe life into the space, making it feel vibrant and welcoming.
- Bedroom: Create a tranquil retreat by incorporating deep green tones into your bedding or curtains. A dark green accent wall can add a touch of drama and sophistication while still maintaining a calming atmosphere.
Green can work great in a dining room too as it makes you want to eat all those fresh healthy foods!
Nature-Inspired Touches: To complement green tones, incorporate natural elements like wooden furniture, stone accents, or woven baskets. These textures work beautifully with green, enhancing the feeling of bringing the outdoors inside.
3. Muted Pinks & Grays: A Feminine Touch
Who says pink is just for little girls? When paired with soft grays, muted pinks can create a chic, sophisticated space that feels both cozy and stylish. Pink has a nurturing, calming quality that adds warmth, while gray provides a grounding, neutral backdrop. This color combination is perfect for spaces where you want to relax and feel pampered.
Pinks and peaches can be added through decor in small quantities or work well for paint colors in small spaces like bathrooms.
The color Pink is often associated with nurturing and love. It is believed to have a calming effect and is used in color therapy to help reduce feelings of aggression and resentment. Lighter shades of pink are often seen as soothing and comforting, while brighter pinks can be stimulating and energetic. However, too much pink can be overwhelming and may come across as overly sweet or naive. It’s important to balance pink with other colors to create a harmonious and appealing palette.
How to Use It:
- Bedroom: Opt for a soft blush pink bedspread with gray sheets and pillowcases. Add a few pink and gray decorative pillows and a gray upholstered headboard to tie the look together. This combo is ideal for creating a soothing, feminine space where you can recharge.
- Bathroom: Paint your bathroom walls a soft gray and add blush pink towels, a pink bath mat, and maybe even a few rose gold accents. This creates a spa-like atmosphere that’s perfect for unwinding with a bubble bath after the kids are in bed.
Mom Hack: Keep it subtle with blush pink cushions, a gray-pink area rug, or a muted pink throw over a gray sofa. This combo works well in spaces where you want a gentle, calming effect without overwhelming the senses.
4. Creamy Neutrals: Timeless Elegance
Creamy neutrals like taupe, soft browns, and ivory create a warm, welcoming environment that feels cozy yet sophisticated. The beauty of neutrals lies in their versatility—they can easily be dressed up or down, depending on your mood or the season. These shades work well in almost any room, making them a great choice if you want a harmonious, timeless look throughout your home.
Color brown is usually associated with resilience, probably due to its earthy tones. It is viewed as a color that provides safety and security. It improves our lives by reminding us about the things that are most important-our connections to earth, home, family. Therefore, it inspires us to appreciate the small things in life.
Brown is not about luxury and extravagant things, but values basic necessities in life. Brown is also described as a natural color, which inspires warmth and comfort. Dark shades of brown represent wood elements, while light browns stand for earth.
How to Use It:
- Living Room: Paint your walls a soft cream or taupe and add a mix of textures with a jute rug, linen curtains, and wooden furniture. Neutral tones allow you to layer different materials and finishes, creating depth and interest without overwhelming the space.
- Entryway: Welcome guests with a creamy, neutral color palette that feels warm and inviting. Consider a taupe or ivory console table paired with a neutral rug and some simple, elegant decor like a vase of dried flowers or a soft-toned piece of artwork.
Decor Idea: Incorporate natural textures like a jute rug, wooden furniture, or linen curtains to add depth to your neutral palette. Adding a few metallic accents, like a gold-framed mirror or bronze light fixtures, can elevate the look and add a touch of luxury.
Personally browns and taupes are not my favorite colors but I do love wood tones and like to bring those earthy vibes into our home through wood furniture and natural elements.
5. Lavender & Soft Greens: A Calming Escape
Lavender is renowned for its relaxing properties, and when paired with soft greens, it creates a refreshing and peaceful environment. This color combination is perfect for spaces where you want to create a calm, restorative atmosphere, making it an excellent choice for a bedroom, bathroom, or creative space.
Purple is often seen as a color of complexity, embodying the depth and mystery that lies at the intersection of passionate red and tranquil blue. It invites contemplation and introspection, suggesting an air of mystery and intrigue.
This color is associated with creativity and imagination, making spaces feel more inspired and vibrant. Its presence can stimulate artistic thoughts and innovation, making it a favorite for creative spaces.
Probably not a combo that you would normally think of but just get in your mind the image of a lavender field and there is instant calm.
How to Use It:
- Bathroom: Create a spa-like retreat by painting the walls in a soft lavender hue and adding white towels, bath mats, and shower curtains with some green accents. A lavender-scented candle or essential oil diffuser can enhance the calming effect, making your bathroom the perfect place to relax and recharge.
- Bedroom: Use lavender as an accent color on bedding, pillows, or even a feature wall, paired with soft green decor and accessories. This combination can help create a soothing, sleep-friendly environment where you can escape from the stresses of the day.
Quick Fix: Add lavender-scented candles, soft green towels, and maybe even some lavender sachets in your drawers to enhance the calming atmosphere. This pairing is perfect for winding down after a long day, whether it’s in your bedroom or bathroom.
6. Pastel Yellows & Grays: A Sunny, Balanced Vibe
If you’re looking to brighten up your space without it feeling overwhelming, consider a combination of pastel yellow and soft gray. Yellow is a cheerful, uplifting color that can boost your mood, while gray balances it out, keeping the space calm and sophisticated. This pairing is perfect for kitchens or playrooms where you want to encourage a happy, energetic vibe.
The vibrant hue of yellow has remarkable effects on the human psyche, eliciting a broad spectrum of emotions and behaviors. Yellow is mentally activating, psychologically stimulating higher cognition, creativity, and feelings of optimism. However, in excess, it can also overstimulate, resulting in anxiety, impulsiveness, and emotional fragility. Yellow sharpens analytic thinking and decision-making by muting subjective emotions, but this lack of empathy can become extreme logic at the expense of compassion.
Use it in the right way and in the right shades it can be so cheery!
How to Use It:
- Kitchen: Use pastel yellow on your walls or cabinets and balance it with gray countertops, backsplash, or flooring. This combination will make your kitchen feel warm and welcoming, a place where the whole family loves to gather.
- Playroom: Paint the walls a soft gray and add yellow accents through rugs, storage bins, or wall art. This creates a playful yet serene environment that’s perfect for encouraging creativity without overstimulation.
Bright Idea: Add yellow flowers, a lemon bowl, or gray-and-yellow patterned dish towels to keep the sunny vibe going without committing to a full room makeover.
Final Thoughts: Personalize Your Space
When you are on a budget it can be a great idea to stick to neutral paint colors as your base color and then add bold colors in small quantities. To keep white walls feeling fresh rather than sterile add in some warm tones and textures and bright colors through your furniture and decor.
You can ask experts at the paint store to help you come up with a whole house color palette or look online for inspiration if you are ready to go all in. When you are thinking about your interior design color schemes choose a cohesive color palette that the whole family can enjoy for a long time.
The wrong wall colors can get old fast so start by adding in different colors through decor first if you’re not sure. Isn’t it so wonderful that our world has such a variety of colors!
Different colors can create different moods so think about the mood you want to set in each room. That is a simple way to start.
I’ve shared some color palette ideas here but there are tons online and you can also use color generators to create your own! Find your main color and then look for complementary colors. Your perfect color palette awaits!
Darker colors can be scary to try but they can also create wonderful spaces and if you don’t like something you can also paint again. The best color combinations are the ones that make you and your family happy and give your home a cohesive look.
Remember, Mama, your home is your haven, and it should reflect what brings you peace and happiness. While these color combinations are a great starting point, don’t be afraid to mix and match, experiment, and create a space that feels uniquely yours. Your goal is to create a home environment that supports your well-being, helping you feel calm, centered, and ready to take on whatever motherhood throws your way.
Also, remember this: It doesn’t have to be fancy to be calming. We’re renting a small modest home that I love but I can’t control everything with the interior. I chose to paint the bedroom anyway but I would not want to paint every room in the house. But I can still bring in calming color combinations through decor.
So, what’s your favorite color combo?
